Charles Williams was a writer of unusual genius. He had an ability to make theological matters not merely interesting to the lay person; but to make them appear, what they in fact are, matters of Life and Death.

The Descent of the Dove A Short History of the Holy Spirit in the Church Charles Williams 9781781398234 Books Reviews
Terrific author.
Charles Williams was admired by two of the greatest poets of the 20th century, W.H. Auden and T.S. Eliot. In fact, Auden said that he read and re-read THE DESCENT OF THE DOVE constantly and always found new illuminations.
Since orthodox and "existential" Christianity are now museum exhibits, not living options, it's hard to see what Auden found in the book. In fact, even in its time, Williams' book seems facile in many respects. If he seriously intended to write about the "Holy Spirit in the Church", a "short history" was inappropriate, as would be, for example, "A Short History of Literary Criticism".
Perhaps Auden was so taken because Willaims apparently first introduced him to the writings of Kierkegaard, which would qualify collectively as the most voluminous history of the "Holy Spirit"--and his enemies--ever written.
Williams' "supernatural" novels are almost unreadable, unlike the fiction of C.S. Lewis, which is old-fashioned but still can be read with pleasure.
I'm rereading this book because I'm interested in the books that influenced Auden. It's okay, but more of a chore than Cochrane's CHRISTIANITY AND CLASSICAL CULTURE, Niebuhr, and even Kierkegaard in moderation, all of them favorite of Auden.
Great book.
